What is Te Kauae?
Te Kauae is designed to provide older people with a safe space to seek support and guidance. Recognising that elder abuse is often hidden and underreported, this service offers culturally responsive and practical assistance to those at risk. It also provides education and prevention strategies to empower kaumātua and their whānau, ensuring they can access the resources they need to live with dignity and independence.
Why is this Service Needed?
With an ageing population in Aotearoa New Zealand—expected to reach 1.2 million people over 65 by 2034—there is a growing need for targeted support for older adults. Many experience financial abuse, emotional neglect, or harm from family members, carers, or others they trust.
Barriers such as dependency on abusers, ageism, and lack of access to culturally appropriate services can make it difficult for them to seek help. Te Kauae addresses these challenges by creating a trusted, community-based network of support.
How Can Te Kauae Help?

- Confidential Support & Advocacy – Providing a safe and non-judgmental space for older people to share their concerns and receive guidance.
- Whānau Ora Assessments – Using a holistic tool to identify the needs of kaumātua and ensure they receive tailored support.
- Community Outreach & Engagement – Attending hui, marae gatherings, and community events to connect with older people and their families.
- Education & Prevention – Raising awareness about elder abuse, its signs, and how to prevent it.
- Collaboration with Other Services – Working with local health providers, iwi networks, and social services to offer wrap-around care.
